A Black Man's Cry

 A Black Man’s Cry

America, I am your favorite product, but yet your biggest threat.

A Black Man’s Cry is a gritty photo series from my perspective that captures the harsh reality and generational trauma of what society has done to Black Men.

TO BE PASSED DOWN

LISTEN WITH YOUR EYES, TO THE BLACK MANS CRY

America, you have never given me a fair shot. My ancestors’ bodies where were the currency that this country was built on. I am a byproduct of mass incarceration, lynching, Jim Crow, poverty, and psychological warfare.

“Land of the Free.” But is it? There is a generational trauma of being hunted and killed in and out of my community. I find myself in a continuous state of worry. My constant thought is “Am I going to be next?” I wake up and go to sleep with this level of stress every day. A Black Man’s Cry, is my depiction of what society has done to Black Men.

FIX YOUR CROWN KINGS

MY MOTIVATION

I wanted to capture the harsh reality of the black experience. It is my attempt to show that the strange fruit hanging from the trees not that long ago, were actual men who just by virtue of the color their skin, were treated less than human. We are still being shot and killed for sport. I thirst for the ability to relax and be able to stop and smell the roses before my life is over. Unfortunately, I feel like I am being suffocated by the chokehold this society has on me. It is as if I CAN’T BREATHE.  I am a part of an ongoing vicious cycle.

When you view this series, I want you to see how our history and our current situation resemble one another. But more importantly, I want black men to control their own narrative, value their worth, and see themselves as kings.
